2026 and Beyond

| The professional practice of Psychology finds itself at crossroads in 2026. Both the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB), two very important bodies with relevance to this issue, are in the process of updating their Model Licensure Acts (MLAs). Issues that these MLAs address include suggestions for the licensure of: (1) doctoral-level psychologists, encompassing both health service providers in psychology (i.e., HSPs) and applied consulting providers in psychology (i.e., ACPs), (2) master’s level professionals, and (3) prescribing professionals. As currently written, the MLAs differ in significant ways. These differences need to be thoroughly understood and appreciated. They have significant implications for the field of Psychology, as it is, and as might be. This session provides an overview of the salient issues. |
